SUMMER HOUSEHOLD TIPS:
Summer is a time of high temperatures and severe weather. It is also an opportunity for homeowners to perform some simple preventative maintenance that can pay dividends year round.
1. Check your roof valley for leaks.
The roof valley is the intersection where two roofs join together, and it can be a common problem area because water naturally runs in that direction. Inspecting the valley biannually and after severe storms can go a long way towards minimizing damage to your roof.
2. Clean the condensate drain line to ensure your A/C runs efficiently.
Removing clogs and blockages from your air conditioning drain line prevents mold and algae from growing and could save you thousands of dollars in the future.
3. Make sure your pool area is safe.
A swimming pool is considered an "attractive nuisance," as small children may be attracted to it. Install a four sided fence around your pool to keep out unsupervised children. Always supervise the activities of small children and remove dangerous chemicals such as chlorine from areas where they can be accessed by children or pets. Consider taking a summer swimming or water safety course to stay up to date on the latest safety measures. Finally, don't forget to bring a towel!
4. Protect your home when you go out of town.
If you have a home security system, be sure to advertise it through a yard sign or sticker. Consider leaving a television or light on a timer to create the illusion of somebody being home, or put an extra car in the driveway. Finally, consider keeping quiet about your trip plans on social media.
5. Keep dangerous materials out of the reach of pets and small children.
Make sure that gasoline, propane tanks, pool chemicals, car cleaners, and the like are kept under lock and key. Seek immediate medical attention if any toxic materials are ingested.
